The site uses a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor

To change this to a standard editor do the following

Goto UserCP > Edit Options

Scroll to the bottom of the page find Message Editor Interface

Change your editor there

The difference is when you add a smilie you see the :wink instead of the Icon. :D
