    5-6 years is the accepted norm. My experience reinforces this. Helmet liners and hardware bits get funky about that time. If that is an indication of the condition of the foam that protects, then OK buy another. My head does not function well with old age, but it is the only one I got :)

    i have to change my yearly, i ride yearround and commute too, and the past few years sonoma county has been blanketed with fog on my morning commutes.... really bad.....

    damn lids smell like mold even if you ride with all your vents closed through a winter season

    i actually have boughten a cheaper hjc lid for commuter purposes a few years back, then i just couldnt deal with how noisy and heavy it was compared to a shoei.....
