    Default Heated grip installation

SO, I just bought a set of these heated grip things that go under the grips. They're the thin film, waffle iron looking deals.

If memory serves, they send the same amount of heat to both sides. Which means the left grip gets hotter then the right, because the throttle tube doesn't conduct heat as well as bare metal.

Also, if memory serves, at 2 Ohm resistor on the left side is the fix for this.

    Does this sound right?

Yes Tony use a 2 ohm resistor, but mount it with zip ties to the frame to dissipate heat, those things get pretty warm. I wold have to recommend you add a relay to the battery side. That way the grips are on the low power side and when you turn the key off it switches the relay and power off to the grips.
I got a wiring kit for lights from Kragen and added it to the heated grip kit. Its pretty straight forward.
Only problem I had with that kit was the wires to the twist grip kept breaking and I had to keep soldering it use it more than a cold season. I finally removed it when I repaired it for the 3rd time and got the more expensive kit with the actual grips and a dial controller, I still need to install a relay so I can kill the power when the key is off.

Good luck Toney. I will look for the diagram I used for the relay and see if I can post a link to for you.
No track whoring this year, just ride, ride, ride.. Hope to see you riding. So Terry where I find a track pimp anyways?

Curious, wouldn't the left grip loose heat faster than the insulated right grip? Meaning that the heat would be zapped away quicker from the grip that's on metal than the one that's insulated by the plastic throttle pipe.

That is correct Jimmie. Some people will wrap a layer of tape under the left heater to reduce this effect.

    Tony,

Concerning the resistor. Does your kit have a "High & Low" switch? If so the resistor is wired in line to the power feed to both grips for the low setting. The resistor adds a load to provide the "low" setting. You can confirm this by checking to see if each grip heater only has 2 wires. On this point of 2 heat settings, I have used the kit you are installing with the resistor and it works well, just make sure the resistor does not melt any wires nearby. Jimmie's recommendation for relay is sound and makes for a sano installation.

There is another similar kit out there that uses 2 heating elements for each grip to provide the High/Low function. I like it better because it eliminates the resistor and they designed it so the left heater has more watts to make the heating more even. It is priced a few bucks more, but I can not remember where I got it? Do a web search. They are identified by 3 wires from each heater. This same company makes them for snowmobiles also. Don't buy that kit. It gets toooooo hot.

I put a Dual Star kit on my SV1K without resistors, relays, etc. There isn't enough of a difference in heat between the grips to be noticeable when riding. The hi/lo is perfect, no rheostat needed.

Consider just following the instructions and installing as directed.

Ordinarily, that's how I roll. But, the set that I "ended up with" are designed for ATV's, and most certainly do not differentiate between left and right.

They do, however, have the 3 conductors, Terry!

I'm just gonna hang them and see how they work. If'n they needs gizmos and gadgets, I'll install accordingly!
