The process of cleaning the float valve seats, and checking the float valves isn't terribly difficult, but it's hard to describe setting them to specification without pictures.
I would recommend Larry's book for that.

A non-firing (or low firing) cylinder isn't always a stuck float valve. I was having carb issues that felt like a non firing cylinder, and it turned out to be clogged idle jets/emulsion tubes (I was having issues with a disintigrating fuel tank liner).

But Tim, he said this "NOW to make matters worse I have gas in the crankcase" That is a fuel level issue. Whether it's a bad needle and seat, bad float or wrong fuel level (float height).![]()

Yeah, that would lean toward a stuck float.
However, it would also lead to a distinct raw fuel smell coming out of the exhaust while cranking.
