    Default Bridgestone BT016 Boner

I placed a set of BT016's on the R1 after much talk with Jimmie and others. I for cost reasons went with the 16's for a few reasons. 1: the lasting power 2: Reviews pro and con being a decent road tire and 3: my buddie Jimmie says I would be faster than Valentino and smoother than Spies.

With that said, I have complained about the 16's since day one. I have listed a few reasons mainly they feel slippery and the front has always felt like it was ready to tuck at any time. Trying pressure, damping, compression and riding position and technique, I never felt comfortable on the 16's as was with the Q's.

    Maintenance Day.
Today was the day I changed oil, plugs (Iridiums ME LIKE) check torque and the entire bike INCLUDING VISUAL TIRE INSPECTIONS and here is the wow thats messed up part.

When I check a bike over I do a pre-race inspection, I check alignment, rotation, brakes, electrical everything that includes visually looking for breaks, or possible failures. THIS INCLUDES MIC'ing the rims for out of round and out of true. Yes yes yes they are molded rims, but they stiill will bend.

During the MIC of the front, I notice a bump as the wheel spun, not a bump like a bump on the head, but a bump like the bead was not set. Looking further, I eliminated that, the bead seating as it is perfect on either side. The Rim is as true & straight as the virgin mary. So I takea my Mag glasses out and flash light, set to look at the tire to find the damn tire has about a 15mm by 15mm by 10mm ... for a lack of better words tumor on the sidewall. Its not a bubble, not damage its a defect. on the right side and this is the side I get very spooked on. A camera pic cannot see it, nor can the naked eye unless your really looking at it and finally see it. Like one of those paintings you look at for so long then poof it turns into something else.

I do not think I can bring it to Bridgstone I will show it to the shop I had mount them, but I guess the case of JOHNS NOT A SQUID ITS THE TIRES is solved!! Well Maybe not, I am a squid but faster than most

I am more pissed because I did not catch it sooner and this is a warning to all, when inspecting especially a new set of tires, to be very fickle when doing so.

Thats all, I will be going back to the Q's though, as much as I like the BT's for wear, I really hated them in the canyons.

My name is R1-Limited and I approve this message
Add paid for by the better half of wacking off, at 50 and above, Its not a slap shot anymore

Great write up. I had a truck tire get a tumor once. Turned out air was getting between the layers of rubber from inside the tire. Never lost pressure but I was told it could pop at any second and was not safe for driving. Got it replaced free of charge with about 60% tread.

Further inspection this morning reveals the facts.

The Damn RIM is bent. Yes and I believe it was done when the changed the tires. The bump forcing the tire out is a small divit left by the tool that initially y lifts the tire off the rim.

The tire it seems is filling that small gap and now has formed the tumor as I call it. the Divit is visible to the naked eye. Damn, so now I have to go back to the shop that installed the BT's and show them the damage. this bike has never been dropped, I DO NOT WHEELIE, I have never hit anything larger than a polywog.... There is no impact to say a rock did it, but a scratch on the rim just below the bead...

I am almost inclined to think this is the weld but these are formed Rims.

    Sucks......

You pegged it I have seen it time and time again. We had a young guy doing gopher work and light wrenching at one shop I worked at. Customer brings in a new set of lightweight rims and tires to be mounted up for the rear of his quad, young guy tacos both of the rims. The owner was smart enough to never let him use the tire machine again.

Back to the BT-16's I loved my rear one, it worked great at day to day riding. Then on one Hooligan ride that I went on, everyone was on full race softs and the poor ol 16 gave it a good showing but just couldn't cut the mustard. I have ridden with other bikes one being an R1 that ran them and I was impressed they even stuck with over double the HP that I have. I still say that unless your going track speeds the BT-16's are really great tires.
